Introduction to
Autism Alliance
Autism Alliance Association Inc. was formed with the aim of establishing an Autism Specific School for children aged 9 through to 18 years. Currently Victoria West does not have an Autism Specific School for children of this age group. Without a specialized school catering for the specific needs of children with Autism, these children cannot be expected to reach their full potential and maximize their independence.
Autism Alliance is comprised of a Management Committee of six very dedicated professionals, whose role is to oversee the implementation of this project.
There are also a large number of passionate individuals involved in our fundraising and our Grounds & Works Committees. Partnerships with a number of professionals and advisors have been created and they have been providing services and supporting Autism Alliance with this project.
There has been overwhelming professional and community support for this project and unanimous agreement that this school is essential to fill the gap in appropriate education for children with Autism.
Prevalence of Autism
A recent Autism prevalence study for Australia found that 1 in 160 children between the ages of 6 and 12 years have some form of Autism Spectrum Disorder. With an annual birth rate of around 250,000, this means some 1560 children with 1560 families lives will be altered forever. Evidence also suggests that the prevalence of Autism is on the increase. These numbers make it a problem that can no longer be ignored.
The Autism Alliance Approach
It is understood that less the 20% of autistic children in public early intervention schools, migrate to mainstream schools and often struggle both academically and socially, placing undue psycholical stress on these children and their families.
Our approach is to employ the latest in well researched learning techniques to assist children with Autism reach their full potential. The school will develop both academic and independent living skills to prepare students for a successful transition into post school community life, employment or possible further study.
The evaluation of Autism Specialist Schools in New South Wales demonstrate that this specialist school approach is working well and provides a benchmark in delivering high quality programs for children with Autism in Victoria.
Autism Alliance is a Non Profit Organisation and has Deductible Gift Recipient status, so Donations and Gifts are Tax Deductible.
